Here at GIS,
we offer a wide variety of speech and language services to meet
the needs of our students. Our goal is to help our students
improve their speech, language, and communication skills so they
can achieve their best -- academically and socially. The
speech-language pathologist's role in identifying and addressing
students with special needs may include:

classroom observations
and formal evaluations to learn why a student may be
struggling in the learning environment

implementing individual
and/or group therapy for students with identified needs
-
working with small groups
within the classroom
-
assisting classroom
teachers in meeting the students' needs in the classroom
-
collaborating with
parents, GIS Special Needs Department, GIS teachers/staff,
and outside professionals to provide the best care plan for
the individual student
Both
elementary and secondary students are served by GIS speech and
language therapists in areas such as:

articulation

fluency (stuttering)

language disorder/delay

auditory and language
processing difficulties

Autism spectrum disorders/social
communication

Apraxia/oral motor
difficulties

annual hearing screenings

cognitive skills (memory,
listening, organization)
