12학년 학생들의 모금 방편으로 마련된 중세풍의 축제에, 약800명의 학생들, 학부모, 이웃들이 참여하였다. 300개의 햄버거와 160개의 소세지 핫도그, 100줄의 김밥, 800잔의 음료를 준비하였다.

“70명의 12학년들은 주제를 정하기 위해 아이디어를 내고 만화로 된 로빈 훗을 관람하고 퍼레이드 행사를 구상하였습니다.” 라고 지도교사 제니 메렉 선생님이 언급했다. “ 멋지게 분장하고 칼싸움, 성곽, 해자 건너기, 활쏘기같은 재밌는 게임을 했습니다. 저희들은 중세풍을 좋아했습니다.”

12학년들은 열심히 준비했으며 정말 재밌었다. 그들의 분장을 보고 놀라웠고, 아이들이 행사에서 즐겁게 노는 것을 보고 즐거웠으며, 행사에 더 일찍 열어주기를 바랬다. 미리 계획했기 때문에, 셋트를 짓고, 장식을 하며, 노끈으로 게임하는 곳의 경계선을 구분지을 수 있었다.

“가족의 밤은 2005년 부터 시작했고 , 잔디밭에 앉아서 영화를 관람했습니다. 2006년에 12학년 학생들은 “오즈의 마법사”를 상영했으며, 네 명이 분장하였습니다. 그 때 부터 지금까지 주요 행사로 자리 잡았습니다!” 라고 지도교사 베키 존슨선생님이 말했다. “계산해보니, 56,000바트(1,680달러)의 수익금이 생겨 졸업여행 경비를 마련했습니다.”

학부모들은 컨퍼런스 주간에 16개의 웍샵 중에서 선택했습니다: 다양한 기도, 교과과정 선택, 성경적 세계관 교육, 나그네 삶의 방식, 과학 가르치기, 우리 아버지들의 믿음, 학생의 작문 편집, 남자아이들 양육하기, 제3의 문화 아이들, 성경의 예식들, 어떻게 엄마가 자녀들을 잘 빚을까, 소설 연구, 스트레스 또는 탈진, 가족의 동력, 학습 동기 결여 학생들, 성적증명서 준비.

“전도 훈련은 정말 의미있고 재밌었습니다.” 라고 학생들이 말했다. “가장 좋았던 점은 야시장 사역이였습니다!” “전도는 그 사람에게 친구처럼 대하고 하나님의 사랑을 나타내는 것이라고 배웠습니다.”

ESD디렉터 펄리스 선생님이 말했다. 수요일은 남자들이 진행자로 나서는 “아빠의 날”로 강조하였습니다. 학부모들은 가정에서 적용할 수 있는 실제적인 아버지의 역할에 대해 촛점을 맞춰 대화했습니다.-특히 아들을 양육함에 대해 그리고 어떻게 더욱 목적 지향적이 될 수 있는지에 대해.

절반 이상의 학생들이 10개의 프로젝트에 참여했으며, 25명이 과학, 세계의 문화, 미술, 프로젝트 연구, 시, 에세이 또는 짧은 이야기, 악기, 연설 분야에서 수상했다.

“저희들은 상 자체에 큰 의미를 두지는 않았습니다. 모든 학생들들 격려하기 원했습니다. 그래서 ‘우수상’은 모범적인 작업, 전시하는 솜씨, 노력, 양질과 창의성에 대해 수여했습니다. 그리고 ‘격려상’은 가능성이 보이며, 창의성이 있고 열심히 노력한 것에 대해 수여했습니다.” 라고 ESD컨설턴트 아날리사 선생님이 말했다.

Mixing different liquids ...]]> The Second Annual Elementary Science evening provided explosive learning for students and parents! In 2011 students designed, build and shot water rockets across the pool area. This year Principal Maxene Boland expanded the categories to include four areas: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, called “S.T.E.M. Night.” More than 112 students, parents and staff experienced 12 hands-on activities in these fields:

  • “Enlighten Yourself” tested the amount of O2 needed to keep a flame alive under a beaker. Mixing different liquids and watching their cohesion allowed students to “Marbleize Paper.”
  • After they assigned different colored beads to a number, students created “Pi Bracelets” to practice Maths.
  • Blending and feeling globs of “Slime” was a squishy hit, when students combined borax and liquid soap, creating a new substance.
  • A “Computer Technology” station provided tools to research body and plant science.
  • With “Paper Airplanes” they experimented with engineering aerodynamics.
  • “Support Your Weight” showed ways an empty 6” cardboard tube can support an adult’s weight. (The most successful technique was filling it with sand.)
  • “Popcorn test tubes” showed kernels exploding from moisture expansion. Then students hungrily imploded handfuls between their teeth!
  • “Balancing Butterflies”
  • “Mini-Boomerangs”
  • “Liquid Layers”
  • “Lincoln Drops”

“Part of the crowd size was because students could only attend with a parent,” Boland said. “Next year’s Principal Carole Steedman watched with me, along with a smattering of staff.

“But we are thankful to Middle School teacher Freddie Wagner for coordinating Secondary students to supervise and monitor each experiment. This gave them more leadership experience and released teachers from hosting the evening.”

그레이스 학생들은 방학을 이용해 스포츠 활동을 코치하고 아이들과 함께 즐거운 시간을 보냈다. 매일 노래를 가르쳤고 예배 찬양을 인도했고 다양한 색으로 만들기를 했고 영어를 가르쳤다.

파트너 구호 발전 단체 선교사들과 스포츠 리더들과 졸업생들은 크리스마스 파티를 주관했다. 아이들을 기쁘게 해 주기 위해, 달콤한 쿠키로 장식하고 쿠키를 니눠 먹었다.

그레이스 학생들과 파트너 선교사들은 크리스마스 선물로 스포츠 장비를 선물했고 또 지역 교회에 나눠주기 위해 여러사이즈의 겨울 옷을 가져갔다.

마침내, 사역을 다 마치고 스포츠 리더들은 봉고와 트럭을 나눠 타고 6시간만에 치앙마이 집으로 돌아 왔다. 이 먼 거리에, 시간에, 수고할 가치있었는지?라고 질문할 때, 모두가 ”정말 그렇다.”고 뿌듯한 마음을 나눴다.

Seniors concluded it was lots of work, but loads ...]]> About 800 students, parents and neighbors joined the Medieval Fair senior fundraiser, gobbling 300 burgers, 160 veal sausage dogs, 100 kimbob rolls and guzzling 800 drinks.

“All 70 seniors brainstormed the theme, watched the animated Robin Hood, voted, then created matching activities,” staff advisor Jeannie Marek said. “It was chosen for great costume and game possibilities, like sword fights, a castle, crossing a moat, archery. We liked the Medieval feel.”

Seniors concluded it was lots of work, but loads of fun. They were amazed at everyone’s costumes and liked seeing children enjoy the activities and wished they’d opened earlier. Advance planning helped them build sets ahead, decorate and string plastic rope for clear game boundaries.

“Family Night started in 2005 with only a movie on the lawn. In 2006 seniors showed “Wizard of Oz,” and four created costumes. From there it evolved into the major production it is today!” advisor Becky Johnson said. “After costs, their 56,000 baht ($1,680) profit will cover the graduation trip.”

Children said: “I love the activities.” “I paid to throw my buddies in Jail!” “I’ll pay to put myself in Jail.” “Awesome castle.” “I can’t believe we’re using ‘real’ archery bows!” “Let’s sword fight and joust again.” “Rematch!”

Younger kids enjoyed a Fishing game and Treasure Hunt. They kept the bouncy-castle busy until dark, and many surprised winners enjoyed the Cake Walk.

“Carnival is a LOT of work,” staff advisors Sarah Donovan, Brad & Becky Johnson, Jeanie Marek and Kirby Umholtz agreed. “We spent many hours shopping, organizing finances, in set-up and clean-up. But our seniors did a great job. Afterwards we said, ‘Hooray!’ then dove right into Ministry Day preparations. We’re glad we’re a staff team of five!”

Staff and seniors also appreciated the help of about 25 marvelous parents! They bought meats and condiments, cut vegetables, grilled burgers and sausage, sold food and helped everywhere at this annual community event. Other essential staff included Khun Prem, who handled sound and the movie; GIS guards advised and supported crowd control and parking; teachers and Principal Mrs. Fisher were encouraging and helped promote the event.

“It was wonderful to watch seniors work together and produce such a high quality family night,” Principal Fisher said.

All students participating in GIS sports are required to have a current sports physical. Trusted doctors from the GIS community will give the exams and there will be a female doctor to do the girl’s exams.
To sign up for a Sports Physical, pick up a permission form at the main office, return the completed forms to the main office and sign into the queue for a the physical exams. These sports physicals will be good through March of 2013.

AIR POLLUTION LEVELS
This year the haze and air pollution levels have been exceptionally high. The Health Services office continues to monitor the hourly readings of air particulate matter PM10 which fluctuates throughout the day, via the website, http://aqmthai.com. In the aqmthai.com site, click on Report at the top and you can specify your station location (choose 35t SalaKlang Chiangmai). From the list of parameters on the left, click on PM10. You can use the graph or the table. Click on the table for the hourly numbers. For school we are using the PM10 numbers because the AQI numbers are an average over the past 24 hours.
PE teachers and Elementary staff are notified of the numbers to tailor the activity for recesses and PE classes. If your child has had a recent respiratory illness, please let the teachers know if you need to request that your child be excused from outdoor activities. Those with asthma should have their inhalers nearby. Students who have allergies may also be affected. If your child has symptoms at home, write a note if they need to be excused from PE outdoor activities. The nurse office cannot write excuses for symptoms we have not seen

Laughter, off-the-wall questions and amazement were daily experiences for nearly 75 pre-school to 12th grade students and parents at the 13th Annual GIS Extension Services Department (ESD) conference.

“It was very flexible, and sessions were interesting!” a male student said.

Students said God showed them new things: “I shouldn’t be shy with people I don’t know.” “God said to relax.” “I can be more outgoing.” “Doing a hard thing once makes it easier the next time.” “It’s important to learn things I find boring or unimportant — especially at my age.”

Parents chose from 16 workshops during the week: Praying in Color, Curriculum choices, Biblical Worldview Education, Transient Lifestyles, Teaching Science, Faith of our Fathers, Editing Student’s Writing, Raising Boys, Third Culture Kids, Rites of Passage, How Moms Shape Children, Studying Novels, Stress or Burnout?, Family Dynamics, Reluctant Learners, Preparing Transcripts.

“I learned from and encouraged other moms.” “We liked extended breaks to visit.” “Daily Spiritual refreshment was appreciated, especially with our youth involved in leading worship!” parents said.

Students enjoyed swimming, sports, snacks, Bible devotions and a field trip. Pre-schoolers had stories, music and memory verses. Elementary ages added standardized testing, crafts, prayer, African country study, Science, Geography, music.

Middle and High School students tested and studied writing, Art, College Preparation, Online resources, Budgets & Investment, Bible Study Methods and Evangelism Training.

“Evangelism training was extremely relevant and exciting,” students said. “The best part was night market ministry!” “I learned evangelism is just to be friendly and show God’s love.”

ESD Director Phalice VanderPol said Wednesday had “Dad’s Day” emphasis, with more male presenters. Parents like the focused talks about a dad’s role, with practical things to apply at home — especially raising boys and how to be more intentional.

More than half the students entered 10 project categories, and 25 won awards in: Science; Cultures of the World; Art; Research Project; Poetry; Essay or Short Story; Instrumental, Vocal or Speech Performance.

“We didn’t make ‘awards’ a big deal. We wanted to encourage everyone, so ‘Excellence’ awards went to exemplary work, displaying skill, effort, quality and creativity. And ‘Encouragement’ awards were given for entries showing great promise, creativity and hard work,” ESD consultant Annalisa Benner said.

“I really enjoyed the relaxed, fun atmosphere and Art. We want more of Mr. Miya’s lectures!” teens said.

Two highlights were swimming in the ...]]> Fourteen Sports Leaders invited 10 alumni and 11 staff and parents for a three-day Christmas ministry south of Mae Sot. Barely shouting distance from the Burma border, Thoo Mweh Khee school stands in Thailand, educating 400 refugee boys and girls, ages four to twenty.

Grace students used their vacation to coach sports and play with the children. They also taught songs, led worship music each day, helped create colorful crafts and taught English classes.

Two highlights were swimming in the river marking the border and the crazy talent show, including everyone jumping with 2,500 night-glow sticks.

Along with Partners Relief and Development missionaries, Sports Leaders and Alumni helped host a Christmas party. To the children’s delight, they learned to decorate sugar cookies and devour them!

Grace students and Partners gave sports equipment for Christmas gifts and brought many sizes of winter clothing for the local church to distribute.

Finally, Sports Leaders piled into vans and trucks for their nearly six-hour drive home to Chiang Mai. Was it worth the distance, time and effort? Everyone agreed, “Absolutely!”
